Gazes Returned: The Technical Examination of Early English Panel Painting

April 13–December 9, 2012

Yale Center for British Art

This website complements Gazes Returned: The Technical Examination of Early English Panel Painting, the YCBA student guide exhibition for 2012. The exhibition highlights the technical analysis of four panel paintings at the Center and the findings that resulted from these efforts. Working with the Center’s Conservation Department, the student guides used techniques including X-ray and infrared photography, microscopy, and paint sampling to explore how the paintings were produced and how the passage of approximately four hundred years has altered their appearance.

The student curators of Gazes Returned: The Technical Examination of Early English Panel Painting are Hannah Flato, DC ‘14, Ilana Harris-Babou, BR ‘13, Yidan Li, CC ‘14, and Yuxiu Zhong, MC ‘12. The students worked under the guidance of Mark Aronson, Chief Conservator; Jessica David, Assistant Paintings Conservator, Linda Friedlaender, Curator of Education; and Jessica Dilworth, Museum Educator.
