X-radiography reveals the general structure of a panel and its paint layers. Changes that the artist made during the development of the painting are often visible, as are damages and repairs. Heavy elements such as lead and mercury can block X-rays and appear white on X-ray film, while lighter elements allow X-rays to pass and appear dark on film.
